Why this film matters
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing? is a timely and essential film that challenges stereotyping, sexism, and ageism in entertainment while reclaiming the erased histories of Asian Americans. At a time of rising anti-Asian and anti-immigrant sentiment, this documentary counters the perpetual foreigner myth and highlights the barriers Asian American women have faced in film and theater. Through Virginia Wing’s journey, it expands the narrative of Chinese Americans in the South, illuminates shared histories with other communities of color, and advocates for greater diversity in storytelling. More than a film, it serves as inspiration and a call to action to ensure these stories are seen, heard, and remembered.
Help us share this story
We’ve already begun filming, but we need your support to bring Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing? to the finish line. While many Oscar and Emmy-winning documentaries have budgets of $1–3 million, we’re committed to delivering a high-quality, impactful film on a fraction of that—$400,000. Currently, we are raising $200,000 for Phase I & II, which would help us:
🎞 Complete production and begin post-production, including:
- Film on location in New York, Mississippi, and Los Angeles with our professional crew; cover travel, location fees, insurance and rental equipment
- Editing to craft a compelling, polished narrative
- Animated graphics & motion design to enhance storytelling
- Archival footage, photo and music licensing to bring history to life
